Earth’s layers by physical properties. The Earth is also divided into layers based on physical properties.

In this scheme, the crust and uppermost mantle are called the lithosphere. The mantle just below the lithosphere is the asthenosphere. When these layers are put under stress, the lithosphere will break because it is brittle. The asthenosphere will flow.
